Do you like my top - I MADE IT MYSELF!!!

My fellow stitchers (term shamelessly stolen from Tilly), I wish to pick your brains. You see, last week I finished my lovely (if I do say so myself) Pendrell blouse and I excitedly wore it out for lunch with my friends the very next day. I was all primed and ready to gush 'what, this old thing - why I made it myself'....but the compliment I was waiting for (expecting??!!) never came. I did get a lovely compliment about my white jacket and my purse ...but even though I was obviously very happy to be complimented at all (I don't want you thinking I expect compliments thrown at me every day!), I really wanted to say 'Yeah yeah, but what about my top - did you not notice my TOP??!!'. But you can't do that - or can you?

Offending jacket and purse!

So this is what I wanted to ask you...when you make something and wear it out for the first time do you tell everyone you see straight off that you made said item, or do you leave it for them to comment and then say in a very blase manner 'oh yes, I made that'? If you are anything like me, you are just so excited and pleased to have made something (actually wearable) that you are dying to tell everyone! But then I fear of either sounding like a complete show-off (which is not what my intentions are at all) or else I fear that they will get sick of me saying it. Or worse - and here comes the complete paranoia - if you tell someone that you made something then they are obliged to tell you how nice it is...even if they may not think it is!

Yes yes, enough about the jacket - what about this top??!!!

So I'm curious - what do you do in situations like that?

P.S. I wore my Pendrell the next day to work and I got a lovely compliment....on my shoes!

  2. Well I've not worn anything I've made yet, but as I'm taking part in SONP, I think people's first reactions will be shock to find out I have legs ;o) (I'm usually trousers all the way!)

  3. HAHA the other day wore a shirt that I made and was so pleased with myself, AND no one said anything! I was waiting and waiting and no one said a word about it--so I finally said something to my mom and then she of course gushed like I hoped someone would in the first place. LOL

  4. I do just like you did, wear it again somewhere else and see if anyone notices. However lots of people know I sew already so a lot of times I'll get the complement, but right after that be asked if I made it.

  5. Ah yes, this has happened to me. Unless it's a close friend or family member, I just don't feel comfortable telling them I made it up front. I'm still uncomfortable telling my co-workers when I've made something. (sigh) Need to get over it, and proudly declare, "I made this!"

  6. I have certain people I tell immediately. Normally my housemate. I swan into his room and say look I made this!
He normally graciously says he likes it and I run away again and repeat the process with my boyfriend who I get much less of a reaction from!

  7. That happens to me as well!!! I usually wait for the compliment. Now that I wear most of what I sew (and talk it about it nonstop to anyone who will listen), people constantly ask if I've made everything I'm wearing! hehehehe

  8. Ha I don't like telling people I've made something before they've commented on it for the reasons you mentioned, but also because that means they'll scrutinise it extra hard and notice my wonky stitch or imperfect dart...guess am just not confident enough! I wore my Rooibos to my new work the other week where none of my new colleagues know I sew (wasn't confident enough to wear it to my old work as some of my colleagues follow my blog) and was secretly hoping someone would compliment me...but they didn't haha!

  9. I'm the same!! Usually I wait for someone to ask, as a few of my colleagues know I sew. I try to restrain not saying anything (as it might be seen as bragging), but sometimes can't resist.

  10. surely but sure, coworkers start noticing my outfits and my hobby, I don't even need to say anything. They'll automatically ask "did you make that"

  11. Yep, I mostly wait for a compliment so I can say "I made it!!". If people don't ask if you've made something, it probably looks too good for them to ask, and they assume it's shop bought :)
